Sim card for Canada

Going through the pain of having AT&T unlock our phones, so I can switch to a much cheaper carrier here in the US. The new one, though, charges very high data rates for use in Canada ($50 per GB!)

Planning to be in Nova Scotia and PEI for a month. Doubt we'll need voice or text much at all, but would like cell data for all the devices if campground wifi is poor. Any suggestions for high data (4+ GB) Canadian sim cards we can use while there? Having a temp. Canadian phone number not an issue at all.
  • We spend the winter in the US and use an AT&T pay as you go SIM, it works back in Canada, paired with Rogers. We use it in Canada (don't tell them!!) and our US plan has 6 gigs/month.
  • When we travel anywhere we seek out free wifi. Around here where in live in the West Kootenays of B.C., free Wifi is available everywhere, like Libraries, coffee shops, Tourist Offices, city hall, grocery stores like Walmart and others, it’s everywhere. We try not to use the phone at all. We always ask the place that is offering the free wifi , what the wifi name is; so that we are not logging into some other wifi that someone may have started for theft of personal info... which has been done.
However our phone provider ( TELUS) does offer world service plan $12 per day and the USA service, which is $7 per 24 hrs after coming off airplane mode. When we do have to use the phone for making a call to our elderly parents, or making a reservation, that 24hrs that we are on our own system plan / package ... we use it to the max...we pay bills, call everyone we know, download pictures etc.... When we pay that $7 for 24 hrs of use, our package we have at home is now the same package we have in the USA.
We ( Canada) have some of the most expensive cell phone data prices / costs in the world... so be carful, up here.
    Soup.
  • Lucky Mobile, maybe? Feeds off Bell towers, says it's no contract/prepaid, but has monthly (30 day) data plan add ons, for up to 8GB - fees vary. Check the website.

I just found them this morning. I will be checking them out, as they say there are "no data overages" charges. They warn you via SMS when you're getting close to monthly/plan limit, and let you decide how to proceed, add more GB or whatever. Sounds (almost) like an unlimited plan in Canada, at least according to them. :C
  • Cricket. Unlimited use in Canada up to three months at a time.
  • T-Mobile. Unlimited talk text and data. No contract, and they don't lock your phone. Responsive customer service. Cheaper for my family of 4 by a wiiide margin. My in-laws switched from ATT and their bill is 50/mo cheaper. I'm a bit of a religious convert on this.

EDIT: unlimited talk, text, and data includes Canada and Mexico
  • Thanks all! For those of you using Xfinity/Comcast at home for high speed internet, check out their mobile deals. They use the Verizon network. We normally use very little cell data on the devices (primarily always wifi). In our case, without including taxes, etc. our cost from AT&T was $78/mo. Will be $12 from Xfinity. Unlimited voice/text. We'll be sharing the by-the-gig plan, which is $12/gig. They have an unlimited data plan also, for $45/mo per line.
