Smaller motels

We did exactly that several years ago before RVs came to our life. We called them 'mom and pop' places. It was actually pretty exciting. Traveled in a '96 F-250 diesel truck and would drive until we were tired and start looking at possibilities. Stayed in some pretty neat places (Winter Park, Co) and some not so neat places (Dubois Wy) Loved Dubois, but the motel was lacking a great deal.
We don't do that now - health issues with Ms C, but mainly because things have really gone down. Friends came back home with bed bugs in their luggage. That finished this kind of traveling for us. Bugs are not on my list of acceptible things.

I second reading TripAdvisor reviews. You will have to analyze the comments in your own mind and make your own conclusion but most of the time they are pretty accurate. I would also suggest you look into bed and breakfast type properties. They may be time limiting as breakfast is usually only served for a few hours in the morning but can be very comfortable and interesting.

Remind me of those one room cottages in maine, New Hampshire and Vermont that we stayed in back in the 50s. They were everywhere.

Usually TripAdvisor shows photos of the hotels/motels. It's pretty easy to tell which are the little ones.

I'd be careful in some spots though... often the open hallway Motels are pretty seedy. Another time TripAdvisor will come in handy.

I don't know what roads you will be traveling. You may want to check out the LINCOLN MOTOR COURT.

It's on US 30 between Bedford and Schellsburg PA. It should be an interesting vintage experience.

great idea, just about 10 miles from my house on rt30 in the town of minerva ohio theres a very neat clean looking family owened motel. bet theres lots of them out there.

Google: motels in whichever city or town you want to stop in.
