SoCal to Denver in December?

We are considering driving our class A from SoCal to Albuquerque then north to Denver the first week in December for a graduation. We don't mind leaving early to have time to sit in a campground on the way if the weather turns bad. Would you drive to Denver (actually Boulder) in December?

  • oldcarfun,

Is the tank area heated by the furnace? If so, no need for pads.

If they are not heated, but are enclosed, a small electric heater on a mechanical thermostat may be used.

I installed an outlet in the enclosed tank space and run a 600 watt heater which I power from an inverter.
  • Thank you all. I hadn't considered taking I10 to avoid Flagstaff. Flagstaff and Colorado Springs are a concern. Bill and Linda, Coming into Denver from the east is a safer prospect. Our tanks are not exposed and we don't know where we would put heater pads? I'm glad I asked!
  • The main potential problems on that route after Albuquerque would be I25 over Raton, and then between Monument and Castle Rock.

While snow could be a issue, more often than not, the roads will be clear and dry. If there is a snowstorm, wait a day or two and you can be on your way.

Yes I would. Might even go over the hill. Low road should be easy.
  • plan for It to get cold..the high country will be below freezing. Flagstaff is 7000' feet it gets cold early..
Buy chains know how to use them.
never allow your fuel tanks to get below 1/2, as well as your propane tank.
Do you have a Aux generator,, get it ready for winter..
Do you have heater pads under your tanks.. you may need them.
  • Yes, but a contingency would be I10 to I20 to I35 to I70. The I70 part would be west bound. :)
