There are a million blogs from travellers to central and south America.
Moglander.com is one who has finished and he has a list of similar blogs on the right side of the page "BlogRoll" and each of those will also have lists of other blogs. Enough reading for years.
We have bought two vehicles there and spent 9 months so far in Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Bolivia and Peru and currently have the vehicle stored in Peru for when we return in about 5 months to continue where we left off.
Safety?? Just as we did in Mexico for three months, we boondock wherever possible and have had no significant problems that we haven't had similar in the USA.

Home will be there til the day you die, but even when overseas travels start closing off due to ill health and finances and physical ability and all sorts of other factors, you can still continue to explore your own country - of course, provided you have good health insurance.
