Spokane WA to Sun Valley ID

Hello all...we (family of four...9 and 7 year old) are traveling from Spokane WA to Sun Valley ID with our 30 foot travel trailer. We have never traveled this far and I am given 3 options via google maps.
1. Over to Montana and down via I-90E and US-93S 8h 30min 462 miles
2. South thru Pullman/Lewiston via US-95S 9h 5min 487 miles
3. Thru Tri-Cities and Boise via I-84E 9h 38min 587 miles

Just wanted some opinions on roads and ease of drive. I believe option 3 would have "multi-lane" freeway most of the way...any thoughts on the other two? Thanks for any and all replies.

  • Thanks Murphsmom...we've decided to go the Boise route and break the drive up with a visit to the waterpark and a stay at the KOA a mile away. I appreciate your input.
  • #2 and #3 would be the same once you hit I-84 at Fruitland. The roads are both good. Of course, #3 would be freeway the entire way. If you choose either of those, wave at us as you go through Fruitland!

Highway 93 will take you over Lost Trail Pass, through Salmon and Challis and then through the Craters of the Moon National Monument. Those are two lane roads, but well maintained. Large trailers have no problem with Lost Trail...in fact the mega loads bound for the Alberta tar sands project took it.

You can also take Highway 75 from Challis through Stanley and then in to Sun Valley. That is also a winding road, but has some of the most spectacular scenery in Idaho.

Stanley and the Craters are also easily accessible from the Sun Valley area and make good day trips.

    Enjoy your trip!
