SR 8 (Denali Highway)

I'm planning to take the Denali Highway (SR8) from south of Paxson over to Denali NP this summer rather than going through Fairbanks. What is your experience with it? I also understand there are a couple of BLM areas for camping along that route.
  • Mosquitoes can get pretty thick out there. Your best defense against them is a good breeze--such as camping on an exposed site. Avoid the wooded ones, down in a valley. Plus, you get better views from a ridge line.

The pullouts like in the picture posted just above are the best to keep the bugs down. Don't laugh, but last year over the 4th of July weekend I used Bounce dryer sheets rubbed on my skin and hair to keep the knats and skeeters away...it worked and I smelled fresher than bug spray!
  • Thanks for the tips! EEWally, I hope my view of the mountains will be as spectacular as yours.
