Stop and searches on I-10?

First time I heard of this, but I was warned several times that I-10 is having random stop and searches of drivers going between San Antonio and El Paso with either drug dogs, or actively ripping a vehicle apart to look for controlled substances or firearms. Because this is considered a Border Patrol search, normal probable cause rules do not apply.

Is this yet another random "conspiracy" story that we read about all the time without any real merit or any concrete facts, or is this something to be concerned about on a trip to NM and back? I just want to fact check this early on.

  • there has been a check point out there for many years. poor ol' willie nelson gets busted every couple years or so. :)
    the BP uses drug dogs.
and sometimes, they rely on tips from informants.
the only time we've ever had any official come aboard is when we enter CA and pass through the fruit and vegie check. they come on board and look in your icebox and take your fruits and vegies.
  • Are you carrying drugs or other contraband? No? Then you have nothing to worry about.

Are you carrying 10,000 rounds of ammo? No? Then you have nothing to worry about.

Are you here legally? Yes? Then you have nothing to worry about.

I routinely (EVERY WEEKEND) go through the BP checkpoint east of San Diego, towing a trailer with a truck with a shell. Alone. In all the years I've been doing this, I've never spent more than a minute stopped behind traffic, never been searched, never been pulled into secondary. I actively engage the officer in conversation, thank him/her for their service, and go on my way.

Do I carry weapons in my trailer? Yes! Loaded? Yes! I even have (gasp!) alcohol in my trailer!
  • Check points are common along the southern border.
Some are random and some are are aimed at certain types of vehicles.
No, there are not looking at the occupants. More where the vehicle is from. They have license plate readers in most stationary check points. The information is sent into the system so they know who you are before you get to the check point,
We have been checked once, otherwise just waved through.
  • No conspiracy! As long as you are not breaking the laws - no drugs, no illegals etc. then you have no worries! Random checks by Border Patrol agents are a fact of life all across I10 and other roadways in NM and AZ at least.
  • I've seen lots of Border Control trucks out there but have never been stopped. There is a checkpoint tho where you might get waved over, we got stopped there once. The officer got everyone in the vehicle to say something, checking for accents I suppose, and waved us on. Took maybe 2 minutes.
