We pass through southeast PA on our way west, so I feel qualified to respond. We usually take the PA Turnpike to I70 to Indianapolis then I74 to I80 then I29 to I90 across SD. IMO there isn't much to see except corn and soybean fields until you get to the Badlands, with the possible exception of the Corn Palace in Mitchel SD (1/2 hour stop at most).
The Badlands will be very hot in July and there is no shade. Most folks do the Badlands as a drive through with maybe a short hike of two. The small town of Wall is nearby and a visit to Wall Drug is good for an hour just to say you have been there.
Just 60 or so miles west of the Badlands is the Black Hills, with lots of touristy things to do. We have been there a few times, but not in the past 20 years as we would much rather be at Grand Teton and Yellowstone in northwest WY.
