Summer trip to AK from AZ

I am planing a trip this summer and would like some road info. I have a 36 ft Pace Arrow and will have a toad with me.What routs should I stay away from? I drove my old RV in 09 and would like to take a different rout this time, went up the west side of the Rockies then.
  • In 2012 we went up through Banf and Jasper and came back down the Cassiar in our 37C PA pulling a Ranger pickup with no problems. You can't pick a bad road for animals and scenery. On the way South we came across the Taylor and Top of the World to Dawson City. That big V-8 will pull you up anything you will encounter. Use the Allison braking feature down the grades to save your brakes. Definitely recommend supplemental brakes on the towed and take it slow and easy going down the grades.
Ditto on the reference books mentioned above.
Have an enjoyable trip and post your results when you get back to AZ.
  • We drove up on the Cassier, if you have time you should add in side trips to Stewart and to Prince Rupert, fantastic scenery! We camped at the community CG in Smithers on the way up, it was a nice place and reasonable price.

    Why the second post?

Both of them should have been in the "RVing in Canada and Alaska" section.

I think he posted his second one here because he was told to in his other post. Why are you so grumpy? :)

To the OP: Welcome to this forum and hopefully someone can help you.

We crossed at Sumas, Washington but I would think any crossing would be o.k. if it's on your route. Once you cross into Canada you have options of different routes depending on what you want to see before even getting to the Alaskan Highway. Once you're on the Alaskan Highway there aren't a lot of choices.

Many people drive up on the Alaskan and return on the Cassier for different scenery. We've done both and are glad we did.

Definitely purchase the Milepost along with Mike and Terri Church's 'Alaskan Camping' book which includes Canada and the Yukon, also. It would also be worthwhile to purchase the TourSaver 2/1 Coupon Book. One glacier cruise will pay for the book and the glacier cruise is a must. It's usually an all-day tour.

    Have a great trip!
  • Why the second post?

Both of them should have been in the "RVing in Canada and Alaska" section. Read though it, paying particular attention to Roll Call Alaska 2014 and the new one that's been started for 2015. Most of your questions will be answered. Then come back and ask more questions.

There's really only three roads in lower Canada and only one when you get further north.
