One thing you might want to consider if your're retired and have flexible time. You're planning this trip in July and August. Why not move it to August and September. You'll find better temperatures and less crowds.
As stated above, purchase the 'Mountain Directory for Truckers and RVers - Western Edition'. Get it from their site, not from Amazon which is much more expensive for some reason. Whichever time you choose, have a great trip!
