We have travelled many miles on the U.S. and state highways. In some of the mountain states, there really aren't that many interstates anyway. Sometimes just one East/West and one North/South. However, we do not shun the interstates when they are convenient for bypassing or passing through the larger cities as driving/towing an RV on the local city streets can be less than fun. In some cases like I-40 through New Mexico, the interstate was overlaid on the route of US-66 and much of the old highway is nonexistant or the business route/frontage road in the towns along the way.

US-50 is one of the more intact coast to coast routes. US-20 from Rockville, IL through Iowa, Nebraska, and Wyoming to Yellowstone and Beyond is a good route.

US-60 and US-64 will take you through parts of Arizona and New Mexico and on East. US-160 will take you from the Monument Valley area across Southern Colorado.

US-24, US-30, US-36 and US-40 are other possible East/West choices.

North to South in the mountain states US-89 and US-191 will take you to more National Parks, National Monuments and other attractions than any other roads I can think of.
