Here are a couple of the tools that can be used for quick checks of an outlet before plugging into it.
Prime Products online is the only place I have seen this one. It not only tells if polarity is correct but also has a voltage meter. Again – this is a quick check – there could be better ways to do this……

An electrician friend of mine carries one of these in his shirt pocket at all times. He says Klein Tools are the best though a similar device by other brands can be found. These can be found at Home Depot. This tool only tells if a wire is hot – no voltage shown. Stick it in the outlet slots to make sure neither ground nor neutral/common is hot. Touch any wire lying around to see if it tests hot. Also again – a quick test – not the ultimate.
