Electric cars create another problem. They freeload off the rest of us who are paying the gas tax for the repairs and maintenance of our roads. They are also harmful to the environment in the manufacturing of their battery systems and they offload their pollution to the electric generating plants.
I am sure a way to collect highway use tax from electric cars will be found - I think there is an excise tax on tires that goes to roads but I am not sure - and they could tax batteries - but you make a good point.
As we travel we see more and more huge solar collectors being built as well as wind farms with hundreds of wind generators. In the Southwest there are millions of unused acres that will be covered with solar collectors feeding the grid. New technology is figuring out how to store this energy when the Sun does not shine or the wind does not blow. Near Yuma, AZ they use some sort of salt water to store energy for up to 8 hours without Sun - and they are finding newer better ways. Elon Musk is building solar panels for houses with wall mounted batteries that can charge electric cars at home in the garage for free.
More and more old power plants are being converted from coal and diesel due to the recently discovered abundance of natural gas which is now very cheap - and much cleaner. In Mexico about 60% of power plants are already converted to CNG.
Each of these are steps being taken toward the future. Nothing has been perfected yet. Everyday new industries are working toward a better tomorrow. Embrace the future.
