MEXICO CITY Due to the crisis in Pemex, its offshore service providers have had to get rid of about 40 thousand workers, from an original template that was about 300 thousand workers, according to the Mexican Chamber of Industry Transportation maritime (Cameintram).
Francisco Gutierrez de Villa, secretary general of the business organization explained that the reduction in oil prices internationally has forced the productive state enterprise to reduce production, which, in turn, has also affected the maritime sector .
The 65 member companies of the Cameintram have 180 boats, most of them acquired during the last decade.
Of these, 35 have suspended contracts.
"It is an innovative figure pemex introduced, where the contract is not terminated in advance, that is, still in force, but no revenues are generated. It is as standby the contract, and that until Pemex alert you when they are in possibilities of reactivating the service, "Gutierrez said in an interview.
Another 65 vessels are active, but, of these, 30 have contracts that expire in December this year.
The organization expressed fear that next year will decline further work for ships because Pemex delayed in publishing the boat recruitment program for 2017.
"Normally, this recruitment program was disclosed and enfilándose the end of August or early September, and right now we are ending October and is yet this plan," he said in an interview.
