I doubt I would recommend the Port Townsend/Coupville ferry, either by driving across the Deception Pass Bridge or via Clinton/Mukilteo ferry.
The first could be scary to someone that sounds nervous about a 4-lane bridge and the later is a two ferry ride.
Kingston/Edmonds is a different thing. Easy multi-lane access on the east side and a good road on the other. It also allows skipping driving through Seattle, which can be less fun.
Personally (I live on the west-side of the Sound)
I take the Port Townsend/Coupville ferry if we are going north, like Mount Vernon and up. It's actually cheaper, but (for RVs) a reservation is a
mustIf we are going someplace around Edmond/Everett I take the Edmonds/Kingston ferry.
I we are going east on I-90 I take the Narrows (and pay the toll).
If we are going south, I take the back roads to Olympia and pickup I-5 there.
