Crosscheck has it right. There are huge avalanche slopes above the switchbacks and they do run across the road pretty much every winter. I have skied down the road across some of the avalanche debris to get out to the highway but would not like to spend the much longer time it would take to ski up the road across those same places unless I was very confident about avalanche conditions. Most avalanches would have run by mid-May but I wouldn't take the chance.
The falls are spectacular in summer so I hope you can make it in there another time.
