I like dogs and always had them until recently. I also hike a lot. Whenever I run into someone on the trail who has a dog with them, on a leash or not, I try to get as far away from them as possible. Not that I don't like dogs or people who think the rules don't apply to them, but you don't know how your dog will react to a wild animal on the trail or how that wild animal will react to your dog. And unless you know for a fact that you can run faster than your dog you just might be that animal's next meal. Why take the chance?
