we're planning on a similar trip Santa Monica up the coast to cannon beach Oregon.
I've driven that road a couple of times, once in a sports car :) and the other in the van with a 30' towable. Now using a 26' mh without a toad. Only concern I have is driving through San Francisco. Don't need to stop in downtown, been there several times, just the quickest way through without excessive traffic jams. Any recommendations? MapQuest says state hwy 1 through golden gate park, over the bridge and out of town. This spring, mid coastal region is having a marine wildlife awareness event along the coast, doing a preview and maybe and article about it before the start of the event.
