DW wants to drive south to north so we are on the inside.

It's a great drive and your vehicle will be just fine. There are people who are afraid of the road and for some reason they believe if they are afraid that everybody else must also be afraid.
On your route, I would suggest driving north to south. The reason being all the turnouts and most everything you want to see is on the ocean side of the road. While there are a few turnouts and parking on the inland side, they are few and far between and they always seem to be next to blind curves so you have to run across the freeway and hope speed racer doesn't come around the curve. There are literally thousands of places on the ocean side of the road to pull off, enjoy the view, and allow the City Slickers to pass you.
