Temporary TT Insurance For Visitor In Alberta

When we bought an Alberta car (vintage 1967 Mustang) while we lived on Vancouver Island, we arranged with ICBC to have temporary insurance to drive it back and they also provided a licence plate for the period.

It was a good thing we did, because a bear ran in front of the car on the highway and damaged the front right side. The insurance covered the repair - the proof was bear fur bits on the car that a conservation officer saved in a plastic bag and gave to us. The bear continued its sprint to the other side of the highway.

Thank for your reply blofgren! A friend of mine just sent me a link to Service Alberta. I learned about what I really need is a In-transit Permit, good for 7 days for out-of-province relocation.

I know I can't avoid paying tax in BC. That's one of the two things we can't avoid in life. That's one of my reason to get another TT to travel more before the other thing hits.

Anyway, I will keep you posted.

We too sold our fiver in Alberta a couple of years ago and bought our current one at a dealer there and brought it home. We had also made the arrangements ahead of time.

I would think you won't be able to get a BC plate for the trailer until you actually register it in BC and of course pay the tax..,. :M

I think you're on the right track with AMA and getting a permit to get it home. When we bought ours it took talking to several insurance agents before we finally found one that knew what she was talking about.

Thanks EK Roamer & other members for the replies. In my case, I don't have an existing TT insurance that can be switched to the NTM TT. I will need a new plate for the trip back. That would have to be done after the ownership transfer. My question is could I get an Alberta plate + insurance if I am not an Alberta residence.

I just find out from the net AMA would handle vehicle registration on Saturday. I will give them a phone call tomorrow for more details.

Talk to your regular insurance. There is usually a "courtesy period" when buying and selling where they will cover your new or old item as part of the existing policy. They know folks buy vehicles (RVs included) on weekends when you can't activate a new insurance policy, so they have a workaround for it.

When I bought my TT and my clipper, both on a Saturday, I simply called my insurance on Friday and told them "I think I'm going to buy this tomorrow, but I won't know for sure until I see it then. Am I OK to drive it home? In both cases, my agent said "no problem. You're covered". And the TT was bought out of state.

I would be calling your regular insurer and posing the question to them. As long as you can give them a VIN and a purchase price there should be no reason you cant get insurance on a weekend. The only thing is that im unsure how willing they will be to insure it for "a few days". Why wouldn't you want coverage on the new to you purchase going forward for the summer?
