Texas to Belize ?

This last week I was in Belize and the our guide said that you can drive from Texas to Belize. WOW that should be a interesting trip. My questions are:

1 - Has anyone here done this?
2 - How long did it take?
3 - How were the roads?
4 - Would you ever do it again?
5 - Are there campgrounds all the way there?
6 - If not where do you stay and is it safe?
7 - General comments about the trip?

Thanks
  • We did the trip, seen at yucatantallman.wordpress.com in our 38 foot Monaco. Plenty of camping options.

Would do it again, but would spend more time in western Belize. We completely missed the caves, creeks, etc.

  • Yep, it's been too long. I'm glad to hear they finally did something with MX-180.

I don't agree, you haven't been down the coast for a while. Yesterday we drove from Harlingen, TX to Ciudad Valles. Didn't hit a pothole.

Last year they had repaved MX-180 from Tampico to Alamo and from Emerald Coast to Vera Cruz, not bad at all. We will post conditions as we head south this year.

Beyond Vera Cruz route is the same whether you start with central route or coast route.
  • We drove the interior route to almost Belize a couple of years ago. You can see that trip on our blog starting http://jacksonsjourneys.blogspot.com/2011/11/october-30th-last-night-in-usa-and-on.html

Last year we entered Mexico from a different location and followed a similar route for part of the way then turned south--did not approach Belize. The blog for that part of the trip starts part way down this page.

I must agree with others that the coast roads in MANY PLACES are terrible. From Veracruz down were much better.
  • We have spent some time in Chetumal, Quintana Roo, which is on the border of Belize, but never crossed the border. So we can't speak to what it is like across the border. But the trip from the Progreso, TX to Chetumal is due-able in just about any size rig; our two rig caravan consisted of 2 37' Class A's, both pulling toads.

That said, there are a couple of things to consider. One is your timeline and the other is your route. You can do it the hard way (along the coast) or the easy way (down the interior). The difference is the coast route will beat you to death with road conditions that range from just bad to very bad to almost impossible, but some of the nice's beaches and beach towns, whereas the interior route is Tollway almost all the way and not much in the way of things to do.

We took the coast route down and it took us over 2 months to get to Quintana Roo. Of course we were sight-seeing and beaching it all the way down and we had to spend 2 weeks in Tampico waiting for parts for the diesel powered coach. But each of our stops was for at least 3-4 days to allow us time to enjoy the areas.

After spending about 6 weeks on the Caribbean beaches of Quintana Roo we headed home via the inland route. This was pretty much a speed trip after we left Mexico City due to commitments at home and it took us 5 days. Almost all of our nights were spent at Pemex stations on this route.

Next time we will take the mountain route down and the west coast back. I don't like to travel the same road twice.

If you need detailed info, just check out some of the websites shown in the signature block of the members and ask questions on this forum. That's what this forum is all about.
  • Yes, we have driven to Belize, as part of an Adventure Caravan tour.
We drove from the Yucatan Penninsula in Mexico to Belize and Guatemala.
It was an interesting trip - would not like to do it alone though.
English is spoken there and signs are also in English - this helps with the navigation. Roads were acceptable and we stayed in a very nice c.g.
but I do not remember the name.

One thing you have to pay particular attention to is having proper insurance for your vehicle. Also there are special stipulations for taking a pet into the country - and you WILL get ripped off with stupid charges at the border.

Would we do it again - probably under the right circumstances. It was a real adventure!
  • I just did a search for Dallas to Belize. Bing Maps says it's about 37-1/2 hours.
