Texas to PNW

I would like to see the Redwoods and definitely Oregon coast....possibly go into Washington too since we’d be so close. What would be best route from Texas?

  • See my trip journal website for a description and photos of our 2010 West Coast trip.

    Email any questions.
  • What time of year?
    How long do you have?
Are you interested in seeing anything in route?
  • When?

We left the Fort Worth area on March 12 last year.

Went to Sequoia NP the first week of April, Monterey CA and as far south on CA 1 as was open the next week. Back over to Yosemite in mid-April (the waterfalls were incredible- the pine beetle devastation was horrible), Redwoods NP area late April/ early May, Crater Lake first week of May, Oregon Coast mid May, in Portland to visit family for Memorial Day, Olympic NP and Mt St Helens and Mt Rainier. Back to Oregon coast for July 4th, then to WA coast and to near Vancouver.

Finally started East the third week of August through Glacier and Yellowstone (Much of the back and forth was dictated because we started late on reservations in the previous November.)

The very best thing about the trip for someone from Texas. We saw 95 degrees in Tucson, AZ in March and didn’t see 90 degrees again til crossing eastern Washington. In that time frame in Texas in 2016 we had seen 113 days over 90 and 22 over 100.
  • Start your trip as far north as you plan to go. The Pacific coast is much better viewed trwvelong north to south. The ocean is then on your right where most of the turn outs also are.
If your planning the trip this summer, good luck! Most likely you will find reservations in most parks already gone.
In Oregon, you will want to try Ft Stevens state park, Beverley Beach state park, South Beach state park, Salmon Harbor at Winchester Bay, a private park for starters.
  • I would head north from Amarillo, pick up US 50 and go west. From Reno, NV pick a route to US 101 of your liking.
