" We all carried a lot more vehicle parts back in those days." My FIL drove up in '49? '50? '51 with his 3 brothers from N. Dakota. They pooled their money and bought 2-2/3 Studebakers, all the same model. The 2/3? A spare engine, a spare tranny, and a spare differential. All carried in the back seats of the 2 that were complete.
What I remember from my first several trips was, while not so much the noise of the gravel pinging, the unceasing general noise from travel on a dirt road: low grade crunch, sliding sounds on corners, some pinging, the occasional thump from big rocks caught between truck dually tires, etc.
