  • I-84 west to I-81 south. Easy drive. Yes, it is a little longer.

Do you really want to pull a 30' TT through the middle of NYC?
  • I'd probably go I-84 (the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge) to I-87 to I-287 if I were making the trip. The Tappan Zee is not a completely unreasonable option, though. In my opinion, going through the middle of NYC with an RV unnecessarily is unreasonable.
  • Whatever you do DON"T travel through NYC and be bamboozledd by the Trailer Life(?) article about a Winnebago showing up in the Wall Street area (they had a special permit, LOL).
I pay to get out of here via the Hudson River Bridge(not in an RV) rather than take the toll free road (Cross Bronx Expressway; massive shudder no matter what vehicle you are traveling in) when traveling north or south.

The Tappan Zee is a viable choice to go south or north. It's being rebuilt which causes some traffic slowdown but nothing like the alternatives:).
As well, the GW bridge, is always crowded (both spans) unless you try for odd hours like 3:00 AM which might just be the time that long distance truckers prefer to muscle their way through.
    HTH.
  • Propane IS allowed on the GWB, you just have to use the upper deck. As for taking 95 through NYC you just have to pick your times. If you can't, then go a different way.

  • Not no, but heck NO

Add even stronger warnings. When we drove across the GWB - summer 2015 - there were strong warnings that propane cylinders were not allowed. They are certainly not allowed in the tunnels.

Tappen Zee ( I-87 / I-287) is the southern most point that an RV can cross easily.

Set a stop just before the Tappen Zee Bridge and that should route you around NYC.
  • Don't do it.

Move up the Hudson to the Tappen Zee Bridge.
I have no clue how to make Trip Planner do that. In SA, I would just put a via point in Tarrytown. Done it a lot.
