Going from Deming to Alamogordo. The most direct route of course is US70 but that looks like it goes right through Las Cruces with traffic and stop/go. Would going around, leaving I10 at Anthony and picking up US54 north of El Paso be easier? Looks like it would only add about 1/2 hour (maybe - depends on how much Las Cruces would slow me down) and about $17 of diesel (maybe - depends on city traffic). I was just looking at the GOOGLE satelitte view maps from Anthony on the 404 road... Not a real big road for you... Those three number back roads sometimes scares me... I also see you have to use a Farm to Market four numbered FM2529 RD before you get to US54... After looking at this using the satelitte view it doesnt look all that bad but has two or three roads to use to get across from I10 to US54...Going on down closer to ElPaso is the 375 Transmountain Highway which looks like a 4-lane divided highway across the mountain which dumps into US54 just as you clear the East side of the mountain. SOme curves but doesnt look all that bad on the satelitte view. No loop backs at least. haha... Maybe someone else that actually has driven the two roads will dime in here...Roy Ken

WHAT????I-10(E) to I-25(N) (at Las Cruces via Exit 144) go 6 1/2 miles then pickup US-70 via Exit 6.63 miles later you are in Alamogordo.

We have taken US-70 through Las Cruces and also I-10 to I-25 north and then catch US-70 east to Alamogordo. It isn't too bad going through town in non-rush hour and the lights were timed fairly well.I would not take the El Paso route since it would most likely add more than a hour travel time. It would be about 50+ miles longer than either of the two routes above.JMHO

Be forewarned...If there is still construction at the I10/I25 intersection south (or east) of Las Cruces...watch for the I25 N detours off I10 eastbound. Had to go to the TX stateline to get turned around to get on I25 N. AND there was about a 3 mile backup once I got back to the construction. This was in March 2013. Going thru LC on 70, all other things considered, would be better than the torture we went thru.

And that 2 mile stretch of I 10 construction is a cash cow for the state !!! I have seen many cars and trucks pulled over in it. They have had construction on I 10 in that area for several years and every time I've been through there someone has been stopped on the side for .. $$$$ speeding thru a construction zone $$$$$$

The construction I saw last week was single lane on I10, both directions, from Motel Blvd just pass Old Mesilla, about 2 miles. The I10-I25 interchange is done.

There isn't a stop and go problem in LC it takes about 20 mins to through town on a week day, just a little faster and no stopping by staying on the interstate

I don't remember a stop and go traffic problem in Las Cruces. At least nothing as bad as Duncan, Oklahoma or Kokomo, Indiana. I was coming in from the east on US-70.

Sometimes I wonder where my head is at. Looking at google maps I was zoomed in to the south and saw the junction with I25. But (since I didn't see it) it never registered that 25 would intercept 70 a few miles to the north bypassing downtown. Sheesh....thanks folks... I10 to I25 to US70 it is.

I did that drive about 3 weeks ago....I 10 east I 25 north hwy 70 east verrrrry easy and a lot faster than going through LC...a lot of stop and go in LC.

I have taken 70 through town many times and it is not a difficult route. Go for it and don't over analyze it.
