We've stayed at the Chimacum park many times and have taken the two routes. If you have plenty of time take 5 to 12 to Hoquiam then 101 around the Peninsula. There's not much traffic but you will be driving through forest for many miles from Hoquiam to at least Forks. You could stop at Forks RV and check out the rain forest of Olympic Nat'l Park - nice flat walking and interesting. Then continue on 101 east to Chimacum.
It really isn't too bad to take I-5 to Tacoma and then 16/3 north. It's more scenic but also more traffic but not too bad.
Flip a coin! Remember summer doesn't start until July 5 in that area. :)
We never liked taking 101 from Olympia north to Shelton, Hoodsport, Brinnon, Quilcene. The road is kind of narrow and curvy and the trucks drive fast.
