Absolutely agree with your comments "...There is also issue of noise and convenience that is hard to quantify..."
We quantify it as no noise - lots of wildlife; lots of noise aka generator, no wildlife. And perhaps as important, not annoying neighbors who might be sleeping late or napping.
We do not hook up (except for when it is over 100F and we shall be in rig during day) even in the few times we are in an RV Park. And we are only in an RV Park when we are visiting relatives and we cannot "mootchdock". If it is over 100 or so and we are out hiking or sight-seeing, we can run air conditioner on battery bank for several hours and generally it only takes half an hour to cool down to below 85F which is sufficient with 12V fans to be comfortable. We have six 12 V receptacles in 5th wheel for: charging phone and camera batteries, as well as for running the 12 V fans. These take about 10 W to operate.
The fans are great in Yucatan. We move them from living room to bedroom where they clamp onto varied doors/platforms. They really make sleep comfortable. Usually spend the days in Yucatan either visiting archaeological sites and/or cenotes (and birding/photography), snorkeling or just sitting in the shade of the awning/palm trees reading, bird/iguana watching.
