Toll roads in OK

Will be traveling home from MN with our new fiver next week. We live just outside San Antonio. I would love to take the interstates but looks like in OK they are tolls. I am coming from Kansas City on I49 and then into OK. Any onsite is appreciated.

  • If you use I-35, the toll road will be through Kansas. I-35 out of Kansas City gets routed on to the Kansas Turnpike at Emporia and is toll from there to the Oklahoma state line. No tolls on I-35 through Oklahoma. That would be a more direct route than coming down I-49 to something across Oklahoma.

I-44 is toll road most of the way through Oklahoma, if you are thinking of going to Wichita Falls then down US-281 through Texas. It is possible to avoid the turnpike sections entirely by using old Route 66 from the NE corner of Oklahoma to Oklahoma City, then US-277 from OKC to Wichita Falls. You'll still need to use the non-toll sections of I-44 to get through Tulsa, OKC, Lawton and the last few miles into Wichita Falls. I've driven all of these sections, and for each of the three Turnpikes bypassed, my driving time has pretty much doubled.

Or you could continue south from I-49 out of KC following US-71/I-49/I-540 down to I-40 at Fort Smith, I-40 to I-35 in OKC. I've not done that because coming from KC that isn't anywhere near my destination. Headed toward Tulsa from KC I will take I-35 to either US-169 or US-75. Going to Wichita (or OKC) I always take I-35, start paying the toll at Emporia.

FWIW, I'm sort of impartial to tolls. Often, from Chicago to south-central Michigan, I'll take the Indiana Toll Road to I-69, instead of I-94, because the traffic on I-94 gets crazy and the road surface in many places is a wreck.
  • You can get off the interstate at KC and take US-69 south, which is mostly 4 lane divided highway all the way to the OK border. Cut west a bit and pick up Hwy 2 south to Vinita. Then you can take old Route 66 highway from Vinita to Catoosa (east outskirts of Tulsa. I-44 will get you through Tulsa. On the west side you can again pick up old 66 and follow it all the way to I-35 by OKC. These parts of old 66 are 2-lane but in decent condition.

If the time is right, stop for dinner at Clanton's Cafe in Vinita and have some calf fries! ;)
  • we use the OK tolls all the time in our Class A with toad and it's not that expensive and well worth it.

ps.. make sure you have change (coins) if you plan on taking any exits along the route. Some exits are not attended.
  • Coming down I-49 to Springfield, MO and hitting I-44 westbound, I-44 is Will Rogers Turnpike (toll) from the OK state line to Tulsa. If you continue on I-44 to Oklahoma City it is the Turner Turnpike (again toll). You can calculate the tolls in the link above.

If you take I-35 from Kansas City to Wichita, KS and on down to OKC, it is the Kansas Turnpike (toll thru Kansas).

Either way it will cost you about $25. For speed, peace of mind, and reasonably good highway it is worth it to me if I am simply trying to get from point A to point B as quick as possible.
  • If you use I-35 through Oklahoma, it's not a toll road. If you do wind up on toll roads, you can use this toll estimator from the Oklahoma Turnpike authortity.

Your FW/truck combination will be class 3. We travel the Oklahoma turnpike with our fiver every year or two, and it never amounts to a ton of money.
