Please tell me it isn't true... coming from MO to TX on 44 and I hear it's gonna cost me 40 + $ in tolls. True? Options for getting around if so?

If you are talking 125 from Missouri and across the Peel ferry, I would not do that with any sort of camper. It is a great motorcycle route but not for an RV.
From Bentonville area you can take I-540 or 71 south to I-40. 71 is pretty hilly and crooked.
62 west to 59 south from Fayetteville is another option.
