We made a loop from ALA thru Utah and back this past summer, basically 1000 miles one way down I-40.
I'm a newbie at 64 and was a bit intimidated on the I. However, out of practicality we had to use it most of the way. Staying in the right lane did not seem to create a problem as there seems to be a lot of traffic on I-40 moving at 60-65.
The biggest complaint we had was how rough that interstate is, especially in Arkansas, but every state had its share of bumps.
PS - I did go around Memphis both ways. It cost us an hour, but we missed 8 lanes merging into 2 and guaranteed road construction in W Memphis, ARK.
