There are plenty of places I'll drive to avoid the interstates.
#1 rule is the route has to not go through large towns (50,000+), and not have towns 5,000+ every 10-25 miles. I don't mind an occasional stop light, but not 15 per hour.
#2 rule is the route must be good roads, and not heavy truck routes.
The 85 miles from Carlsbad NM to I-20 at Pecos, TX is currently what I consider the worst drive in the southwest US. Dozens of heavy overweight oil-field trucks flying along at near 80 mph, and the road is beat almost to undrivable condition. And bridge construction along the route.
I normally will use the interstates to go through very large cities, rather than detour 100 miles around a city.
I also look for and try to avoid major highway construction areas if possible.
