We haven't taken either route in years but in the past the periferico "around" Aguascalientes has always been very busy and in terrible shape. Last trip was probably 6 years ago so . . ?
Also in the past, the bypass around Zacatecas was pretty good.
Zacatecas is a beautiful city, worth a visit. The Hotel Hacienda del Bosque has reasonable RV parking usually, you'll need at least 1 1/2 spaces if you want to open the door on a class A! Some sites even have 50 Amps!. DON'T park under the trees on the highway side (Birds!), park backed up to the building.
for the past 4 years we have crossed further east and go via Saltillo. The periferico around (again almost through) Saltillo is busy but in good shape and traffic usually moves well. The highway south of Saltillo all the way to Queretaro is in good shape.
The the highway from just north of Queretaro to SMA is also in good shape. New busy interchange, watch the signs closely.
In previous years the Zacatecas bypass was also in good shape.
Watch for the transitos in Torreon!
I would NOT take anything bigger than a van to SMA via Guanajuato, and certainly not THROUGH Guanajuato. :E Low and narrow tunnels and streets.
Guanajuato too is worth a visit. Bugamville RV park is the only option for a big rig there.
