Touring Atchafalaya basin area

My wife and are are planning to spend a few days this winter on our return trip to Michigan learning more about the Atchafalaya swamp or basin area. We have driven the 18 mile causeway several times and stopped at the one information area on that route, but that is it. We are looking for ideas and routes of how best to get to know and experience this vast area. Any ideas, recommendations or sharing of your experiences would be appreciated

  • Pat's I heard is very good and so is Crawfish Town, next to Cajun Palms RV resort in Henderson. (In terms of restaurants). Sorry, have nothing else to add as I basically live in the swamp and don't need to tour it! :)
  • Glad to have you visit our little spot on the planet! What time of year will you be coming through? If it is fall, there are some fishing guides available and the swamp tours are pretty good. A must do anytime of year is a restaurant called Pat's of Henderson. You will see the signs on the highway. Check the Lafayette, La website for events. They sometimes have music festivals downtown on the weekends. There is a gas station, don't remember the name or exactly where but it is in that area, I think west of Henderson, that has good boudin balls. What a treat! Worth the stop and is an easy fuel stop. If you will be traveling through the Baton Rouge area Knottaway Plantation in Donaldsonville is very much worth the few miles out of the way. Grapevine restaurant in Donaldsonville is very good. Henderson is on the north end of the spillway, and a good day trip is south toward Bayou Pigeon and Morgan City. In Morgan City, if you are there at the right time of year, you can get shrimp fresh off the boat. You can camp at the parish RV park which is real nice. If you come around Mardi Gras, check out the parades in Eunice, Breaux (pronounced Bro)Bridge, Ville Platte or Mamou. They are all very family friendly. They do Mardi Gras the original way and you have never seen so many muddy little kids in one place at a time. Get some crayfish(pronounced crawfish, not cray) in the spring, the locals will be glad to show you what to do with them. Anyway, glad to have you and hope you have fun!!!
  • I suggest you stop for a few days. There are a number of campgrounds in the area from very basic like Frenchmans Wilderness in Butte Larose to full resort style like Cajun Palms in Henderson. Tour the Henderson Lake area with one of the tour operators in Henderson. The area is good for birding as is Lake Martin near Breaux Bridge. There is fine dining in Lafayette and surrounding area. They make the afore mentioned Tobasco near New Iberia. Much to see and do depending on whit your desires are.
  • Interesting question...as the entire Atchafalaya basin is non-descript from a tourist standpoint. Good fishing venue...is loaded with fishing camps, from floating to land based...loaded with gators and locals using it for the weekend. many cane fields on 3 sides...boardered and intersected by I10,I49 and Hwys 190, 105 and hwy 1, the only thing of interest that Iv'e done is the Tobasco plant off of hwy I north east of Baton Rouge. And the before mentioned air boat rides.
  • There are several "swamp tours" available. We have taken tours out of Henderson, La. before and the grandson really enjoyed it. Henderson is just off I-10 near Lafayette, La. If you are in the area, try it. Also, if you are hungry there is plenty of excellent Cajun food places in Breaux Bridge. Happy travels.
