Traditional, "Old Time," and Bluegrass Music Journeys

Mrs. S and I love these types of music, and we've been devoting our travels lately to finding and enjoying them in the Appalachian region. Last year we spent a couple weeks traveling Virginia's Crooked Road. (I blogged about that journey starting here: https://learnwithmenow.wordpress.com/2015/07/30/packin-for-pickin/

This summer we are beginning to plan a trip down West Virginia's Rte 219 visiting a number of "Mountain Music" venues. Here's our source of lots of information:
West Virginia Mountain Music

I am a guitar-player, and I'm always looking for open jams to join in on. This year I'm also learning mandolin, so I'll be bringing that instrument along as well.

We hope to be touring this area in early August.

There are similar journeys awaiting us in Tennessee, Kentucky, and North Carolina that I know of, and there may be more. Years of musical traveling ahead of us!

I plan to write about all of these trips. I hope to have you along!

Anyone else out there like to do this sort of traveling?

  • It's funny. I was just listening to "Red Knuckles and the trail Blazers" ( Hot Rize), and came upon this post!

Very timely, and hope to find some fiddle and banjo fests out this way.
  • Just got back from Merle Fest in Wilkesboro NC, heading to Owensboro KY in July for Romp fest. We've been bluegrassers since the 70's.
  • SpeakEasy,

Love the music, make sure you keep a blog on your travels this year.

  • I used to cross the Ohio River from Cincinnati to listen to the "Rabbit Hash Ramblers" when they were playing at local bars in Northern Kentucky. Those guys were good.
At the time, they were older than I was. If they're still alive, they would be older than 70.
  • Enjoy... you are headed through some beautiful parts of WV.

We have been to some shows at the Purple Fiddle. Really cool place!!

    Be safe!
  • Funny you should mention the Mandolin, a cousin of mine from back east has in the past few days posted some photo's and info about her late husband, also a Mandolin player. I knew her late husband was a pioneer, at least in Rhode Island, of Bluegrass so I did some Goggling of Sam Tidwell/Sam Thibodeau and found quite a bit of info. You may have heard of him? Anyways....have a wonderful Journey! :)
