Trans Labrador Highway (Labrador 500 and 510)

We are on third week in Labrador doing the Trans Labrador Highway, Labrador Highways 500 and 510. We just did the boat trip to Nain and back (5 days) and left rig in enclosed yard at the wharf. The weather was great for these five days but it rained two weeks before and then this week.

Have been able to boondock/dry camp/free camp the entire time. Tourist Bureaus in Labrador City and Goose Bay told us where to camp for free and the Town Council in Churchill Falls told us to use either of two parking lots (Harbo4with free 120 V AC hookup - which we did not need). Currently in Mary's Bay and was told to use the parking lot at school or rec center. We take an overnight to Battle Harbor (hotel) tomorrow. The road from Quebec border to Goose Bay is good paved road and the first 50 miles of 510 down the "South Coast" is also paved. There then follows 300+ miles of gravel.; the first 255 miles or so have no fuel stops.

The last two nights we found rest stops by rivers and we noted 10 or more great spots to spend the night. Will put these in a later post if desired.

  • Now in Newfounland. Boondocking has been excellent. Province pretty much permits up to 48 hours boon docking on Crown Lands aka "Gravel Pit Camping". Did spend last night at the RV park in La Scie on Baie Verte Peninsula at $20. Best panoramic view of any park we have ever heard of. Now in King's Head and parked next to whale museum with their permission, and free WiFi. Wonderful view of bay

  • Here is link for road construction (look for labrador section):Link

Looks like they are avidly working on route 510. We did this in 2013 with no issues but didn't spend enough time. Looking at it for 2017. It was pretty rough on our suspension
but looking to spend more time there rolling along.

Looks like at least they are thinking about 389 and 138 construction and planning a budget...so there is hope. Doesn't look like they are in any hurry though.
  • Back in 2006, when the Trans Labrador Highway was not completed, I did this trip. See, I left Newfoundland in 2008 so I had to do Labrador before all that

This is one area that has changed, had opened areas coming along mentionably often.

So, did you hear anything about the road along the north shore of the St. Lawrence River from Baie Comeau towards Blanc Sablanc. Any chance of that being done by 2018, when I'll be 75?

& check my slides online for the 2006 historical ..... in signature.
