Going over 50 through Lake Tahoe is a 2 lane slow route with a number of hill climbs plus their tends to be more weekend Gambler travelers to South Lake Tahoe. It is a scenic drive if your not in a hurry and don't mind some mountain climbing. If you are set on going the northern route, I would suggest taking Hwy 80 over to 395 then on to 95. The southern route is more direct with minimal mountain climbing. Just check your weather application before starting out to check on the winds. Anything below 30 mph is ok for me but I prefer below 5 to 15 mph. When the winds are up just be prepared to go slower and hang on to the steering wheel.
