Travel costs comparison

As a follow-up to my post on a travel trailer trip across Canada I'm interested in hearing your thoughts and seeing actual records on the cost of towing a travel trailer across Canada vs driving a smaller vehicle and staying in hotels/motels. We would be towing a 24 Komfort with a F150 Ecoboost. Thanks in advance.

  • After having our travel trailer/5th wheel for nearly 5 years and covering nearly 50,000 and hundreds of nights, I would find it very difficult to travel any other way. I absolutely love having my bedroom, bathroom and kitchen with me at all times. I can stop when I want and stay as long as I want. The worry of making reservations, etc as well as never knowing the quality of the lodging/dining is far outweighed by the additional cost (when you factor in the cost of the initial purchase) in my opinion.
  • To us, comfort, ease of travel, eating at your own table, using your own bathroom and sleeping in your own bed. It's the best bargain there is!

I don't think that we are ever supposed to do that calculation?

Considering the cost of the MH and related expenses, I've probably got the cost down to just under $1,000 per night.

Similar to the cost per salmon from our boat!
  • To accurately calculate the per mile cost you would have to include the actual cost of the RV and/or tow vehicle into the equation. Probably won't like the answer but sleeping in your own bed and knowing whats in your food is priceless.

  • Driving a car...Better fuel mileage. Have to unload suitcases each time you stop. Have to eat out three times a day. No room to move about. Bed bugs bite.

Driving an RV. Poor fuel mileage. Sleep in your own bed, fix meals whenever you're hungry, better quality food, home cooked vs restaurant junk, move around freely, stay wherever you want to when you want to.

    Your choice, I know what I'd choose.....:W....Dennis
  • Each time I have tried to justify just driving the car and staying in hotels and eating at restaurants on a long journey, using the RV is always cheaper.

In addition it's a lot more comfortable to stay in the RV instead of trying to get used to a new bed at each stop. Plus if visiting relatives, the RV provides a sanctuary instead of staying in their home. "Oh we have the RV so we just found a campground nearby to stay in...we'll stop by for a little while to see you".
