Look there are killings everywhere, for different reasons hard to compare. The biggest difference in Mexico vs US is that reporting of the crimes are not always accounted for. The local police are usually on the take so hard to know who is the good guy
I still travel to Mexico frequently but I don't sugar coat it and try to throw the U S under the the bus.
