Maybe there are other persons going to the vicinity of Guadalajara that the OP can join to travel, maybe starting from a different city in the USA, as long as you travel from city to city in daylight and regular toll roads or libres it is OK, the wife and I plan to go back to San Antonio TX at the end of December, we go Mexico City to San Miguel de Allende, Matehuala, Saltillo and then Mission crossing at the Anzalduas bridge, that way we do not enter Reynosa.
Every city mentioned is an overnight stop, we start early and get to our destination still having light, even in winter, my average speed is 55 miles per hour, the topes and bad pavement prevent higher speeds, in the USA I do 60 to 62 miles per hour, that is the sweet spot for my fuel consumption and comfort.
