Traveling companion wanted to Chapala

I am looking for someone who have a car, RV or camper to travel with me to Chapala. I am not looking for someone to travel with me in my RV as there is not enough room. I am in Tucson and will leave via Nogales and drive the Pacific coast to Tepic and over to Guadalajara then to Chapala. Or, I am willing to drive to El Paso and cross at Santa Theresa, New Mexico and go thru Chihuahua, Torreon and Zacatecas to Guadalajara. After reading about the recent murders in Navolta I am hesitant to drive alone. We can stay at RV parks or hotels along the way. I used to stay at a Pemex overnight but no longer do I feel safe. I have a place in Chapala with space for a camper or RV with full hookups, 30-50AMP, water and sewer service if you want to stay at my place.
  • When driving at night, anywhere, you can't see the sights. For us, that's part of the attraction of traveling.
  • Look there are killings everywhere, for different reasons hard to compare. The biggest difference in Mexico vs US is that reporting of the crimes are not always accounted for. The local police are usually on the take so hard to know who is the good guy
I still travel to Mexico frequently but I don't sugar coat it and try to throw the U S under the the bus.
To the OP if you are crossing when we are you are welcome to join us. We are currently in Uruguay but plan on traveling to Mexico around or after Xmas. PM me if interested

  • Maybe there are other persons going to the vicinity of Guadalajara that the OP can join to travel, maybe starting from a different city in the USA, as long as you travel from city to city in daylight and regular toll roads or libres it is OK, the wife and I plan to go back to San Antonio TX at the end of December, we go Mexico City to San Miguel de Allende, Matehuala, Saltillo and then Mission crossing at the Anzalduas bridge, that way we do not enter Reynosa.

Every city mentioned is an overnight stop, we start early and get to our destination still having light, even in winter, my average speed is 55 miles per hour, the topes and bad pavement prevent higher speeds, in the USA I do 60 to 62 miles per hour, that is the sweet spot for my fuel consumption and comfort.

  • Sorry for any confusion I may have caused. In no way am I trying to say Mexico is safe. There are dangers everywhere we go. We take whatever precautions we can and we move on. We cannot and will not live in fear. I hear these things all the time - someone was killed in Mexico or the cartels do horrible things. None of this is exclusive to Mexico. It happens everywhere. It is not about drugs or guns or whatever. It is about people. And it can happen anywhere at any time. Are the odds better or the risks higher from one place to another? I really do not think there is any way to know. When it is your time to go you are going to go and there is nothing you can do about it. We can hide in a bomb shelter and there is still a chance something can get us. But hiding is not living. We choose to live. We bought a motorhome to travel - not to park and watch world go by on TV. Maybe I am crazy but I have been going to Mexico since 1971 and every single time I go everyone tells me I will be killed - or something. I am now 71 and still living. Not everyone is satisfied living in an RV park in TX or AZ or wherever - and playing golf everyday. We like to be amazed and we find lots to amaze us all over Mexico. We have traveled all over Mexico for years by ourselves and prefer to travel by ourselves. That could end up being the end of us - but we think not. It is all a state of mind. Clear your mind and find a way to enjoy life to it's fullest.
  • My wife and I traveled this year for 2 months in mainland Mexico and on the Baja in our RV. Our son and daughter-in-law traveled down the Baja in their RV for two months this year. Neither of us had a single issue in Mexico. In a San Diego country RV park I was accosted by a harmless crazy. My son's biggest experience was been booted out of Walmart parking lot in US because the municipality had a bylaw. The first police officer told them not worry about until another cruiser arrived with his supervisor. Everybody was friendly and helpful. We are off to Mexico again in a week.
