A number of years ago I had ATT and was in Canada on business for a couple of days. I made a few calls back to the States. My ATT roaming charges were about $200! I found out later that ATT has an option that you can purchase for roaming in Canada for about $30 for 60 days of service. Luckily they were willing to backdate the plan for me to cover the roaming charges.
Moral of the story - check with ATT before you cross the border and see if you can get a similar deal.
