With the synthetic oil, we've not used oil pan heaters on the cars. Not as essential. Although the diesel F-250 has the oil pan heater, battery blankets and block heater.
Synthetic in the tranny is very helpful. At -40 my car is a bit stiff in the morning but manages well enough. Steering is stiff too until things warm up a bit.
