Traveling through Dallas

In the past couple months I've driver I-635 across north Dallas pulling my 36' TT twice. No problems and beautiful lanes now that the construction is almost finished.

But I know that road like the back of my hand, know all the exits and the lanes to be in long before an exit / or joining another freeway. I'll be driving 114/I-635/75 north in about a week.

However - AVOID I-35E north of Carrollton - much current construction. Also on the Fort Worth north side - there is much construction on I-35W near Loop 820.

Others have suggested - take US-82 West from New Boston west of Texarkana off I-30. I personally would drive US-82 to Wichita Falls and US-287 from there.

As mentioned US-69 up from Tyler through Greenville to US-82 in Sherman is a very good road/ route for those coming from the south of Louisiana/ East Texas.

US-380 from I-30 at Greenville through McKinney and Denton to US-287 in Decatur looks like a good route on a map.

Mostly it is very good road. But between McKinney and Denton there are a LOT of stoplights. Seems to be a couple new ones every time I drive that route.

(My kids live in Plano and Decatur - getting across northside of DFW is something we do too much.)

The way we always take heading out west. Good roads and a chance to see small town America. But then we are retired and are never in a hurry.

This is our chosen route when going west. I find it to be a very good route.

Don't take I35 from Dallas to Denton, it is a mess with the construction. Don't come thru Dallas during rush hour. Every thing else should be ok, but no matter which highway you take, there will be construction on it.

Speed limit on most of was 70, so not that slow.

OR

"To avoid Dallas/Fort Worth hang a right at Shreveport, take US-71 to Texarkana, US-82 to Paris" -- stay on 82 to 287.

Our route, several times a year, is 271 to Paris, 82 to 287 to Amarillo.

To avoid Dallas/Fort Worth hang a right at Shreveport, take US-71 to Texarkana, US-82 to Paris, then US-271 to the Indian Nation Turnpike which ends at I-40. I-40 to Amarillo.

Alternatively, I-20 to US-271, then US-271 to Paris and the turnpike.

Unless you have some reason for going to Dallas.

Having lived in the DFW area (various municipalities), gone to school in Amarillo, still visiting family in East Texas, etc., my favorite route is just to stay on I-20 to Loop 820 on the SE side of Fort Worth, jog up the loop to 287 (which becomes I-35W), and head north until 287 diverges a few miles north of 820 on the north side. Fort Worth is a big city - but still not as big/bad as Dallas.

Will not be in the MH on this trip. Will be in a pickup pulling a 16' trailer. Making the best travel time will be important. I have been on US380 east of Denton and remember lot on traffic lights and traffic.
