Traveling with grandchild

We will be traveling from the USA with a grandchild and visiting relatives in Canada. Concerned about what documentation may be required other than his passport.

Don't know if we require some type of notarized document from his parents when crossing the border.

Anyone had this situation before....and what was your experience?

Appreciate any feedback.

  • Hi, Thank you for all the responses. We have printed out the consent form and will add language for medical and have 2 copies notarized. Looking forward the trip.
  • You need a notorized consent letter from each parent, or that both parents have signed, and passport. The consent letter says that the parent is allowing you (by full name), your spouse (if applicable, also by full name) to take the child (by full name) out of the country, the dates, and that the parent also gives you permission to get medical care for the child.

    The one that we use (my wife and I do separate letters for each kid), which has worked fine for several years now when my parents take my kids to Canada:

    {Name of father}
    FATHER OF {Name of child}
    {Address of father}

    This is a letter of consent permitting {Name of child} to travel to Canada {start date} and return to the USA {end date} (dates may vary slightly due to unknown circumstances) with his grandmother, {Name of grandmother}, and his grandfather, {Name of grandfather}.

    If needed, grandparents, {Name of grandmother} or {Name of grandfather}, also have my permission to seek medical treatment for their grandson, {Name of child}, during the time of {start date} thru {end date} (dates may vary slightly due to unknown circumstances).

    Signed:

  • You will need a travel consent letter, passport, health insurance coverage as well as authority to make emergency decisions involving the child. Make sure you have up to date medical info as well as any meds in the original container. It is handy to have a letter from his Dr stating the description of any condition he might have as well as any ongoing treatment. Some documents may need to signed by a notary. It sounds like a lot but really isn't.
  • I live in Canada and visit the US often with my children. Each time, I complete a "Permission to Travel" document. I just returned from a two week trip, for which I was asked for the documents when crossing the boarder.

    The document is available online. It will include details of the child and the persons they are allowed to travel with or stay with abroad. Names, addresses, date of birth and passport information is included. The details of the parents/guardians are included. Details of destinations, including addresses, contact info and length of stay are included. This letter can either be notarized or signed by a witness over 18.
  • I don't know about travel documents, but we always had a notarized statement allowing us to consent to health care, along with their insurance cards. Fortunately we never needed to use them, but just in case....
