So I finally finished the repack and I hope and pray I did it right. A couple of concerns I had when working this. Three of the four hubs were difficult to remove and reinstall because the brake pads were quite snug to the drum. Also, the wheel that had some very slight movement seems to be a bit better but when I spin the wheel it starts smooth but then kind of rattle to a stop. It almost seems to be a balance issue.
Yea sometimes need to back the pads off a bit. More so on older brakes if they’re adjusted up right but the drum is worn a bit.
There shouldn’t be any discernible play in the wheel/bearings once properly seated and proper tension on bearings. Although a very slight amount is not a real cause for concern (hard to put a metric to this...sorry).
With pads backed off it should spin very smoothly and freely (the fresh grease will “drag it down quicker when spinning though, if that makes sense). If you hear a little scraping or rattle? And there’s no play, it’s probably just a slight contact/drag on the drum from the brake pads. Again like bearings. Generally adjust up or tighten until you feel a little drag and then back off until just no drag or resistance. (Brakes may still “scrape “ a bit though, normal)
