Trip from Louisiana to Montana.

Going to western Montana in May. Looking at taking US 283 from Vernon, TX up to I-80 in Nebraska. Anyone know the quality of that road?

  • The us highway site is no longer. Try the Americanroadmagazine forum.
  • There is a site called U S Highways ...it gives information on all U S designated highways .
  • Going to a church camp near Libby, MT. Plan to arrive 5/22. Been up through Denver on I25 and up through Wichita on I35, also up through Kansas City on I49. Now looking for a good road up through western Oklahoma or the Texas panhandle. Would like to go up to I80 before heading west.
  • Likely to still be cool in some areas at that time of the year. Took a 5 week trip thru Colorado, Wyoming and Montana a few years ago. Don't know if you are going to Glacier but we were in the east side late June. They had just opened the Road to the Sun to Logan's Pass. Some area of that road still had ice and one lane was closed in some areas. Had to alternate traffic. When we moved to the west side the temps. were warmer and wore a light jacket at Yellowstone.
  • If you go that way let us know how US 23 is. It would be a different route for us too.
  • Not interested in the shortest route. Just looking at taking a road I have not taken before. Interested in the quality of my proposed road.
  • According to Google Maps the shortest to Missoula (you didn't mention where in Montana) would be 1940 miles via I-20 west to 287/87 to I-25 north to I-90 west.
  • Is your question more about the need to go through Nebraska to reach w. Montana or about the best route to just reach Montana , because if you're in Vernon the best overall route is to use US 287 to Limon Co/I 70 then work your way up to Billings then west, or north west.
