Thanks again to everyone for your input, it's been very informative!
Particularly liked the explanation of what the rain forest is, that's one of the reasons we want to go to that area of the country, to experience it first hand and learn more about it. All of the pictures I've seen of rain forests of the PNW have been incredibly beautiful.
Hiking. We do lots of it. Was looking at close up maps of ONP and looks like there's a goodly number of them, accessible from a variety of starting points/trail heads. We have no problems with elevations, as most of our hikes here start at a minimum of 6000 ft and usually above 7000 ft. I know degree of difficulty can still be a factor, but altitude will not be an inhibiting one.
Like the idea of the day trip to Victoria...on Vancouver Island ;)
That would be a wonderful diversion from the other types of exploring we will be doing.
Question about timing. Would September or October be a good time of year for the Olympic peninsula in general? Is the rain forest area wetter, dryer, or about the same those months? Less crowds then?
As a point of comparison, September and October are glorious times here in the Colorado Rockies. Warm days, crisp nights. Threat of snow, while possible, is not usually a factor. Is snow a factor in the rain forest area? My general understanding of the weather there is more rain than snow, except for higher elevations?
