Trip to PEI, NB, Novia Scotia

It is our desire to travel from Texas, up through Michigan and across to NB,PEI and Novia Scotia. We hope to leave around July 4th, and be back home sometime in September. Unfortunately we are not very good at sticking to a schedule and would prefer to be flexible when we arrive to various locations. In most situations we have a good idea of where we would like to be perhaps 1 - 2 weeks ahead of time.

Once we get to the above area, we will perhaps stay in that region of a month or so during the month of late July and into August - never been there so don't really know. How important is it that we make reservations ahead of time? Are some areas more likely to need or require reservations. If required, is it too late??

  • I am happy to see that you are going to tour the Gaspe.

In my opinion, the most scenic drive in North America.

We did it a few years ago, if all goes well, will do it again this summer.

I advise you to Google Quebec Tourism and send for the brochures.
  • Enjoying these posts as we are going to the Maritime and Atlantic Provinces this summer. Will leave sometime after the 4th of July and return home in Oct. We will be spending some time in NY visiting relatives on our way back. Right now we are thinking of doing the Sault Ste Marie crossing and go N of Montreal then crossing so we can tour the Gaspe Penisula. Will go to PEI and then so we can hit Labrador and New Foundland before it gets too cold. Come back and spend more time in NB and Nova Scotia. If anyone has any special things we need to do or see be sure and let us know. Thanks.
  • We are from that region and seldom have problems with getting camping space, unless you are checking in on a Friday.
You are coming to the most beautiful region of Canada. As well you will meet the most friendly people in Canada.
Carol and I would love to recommend some great campgrounds and sights.
Send us a private message, and we would love to help. We know all three provinces well. The lobster will be waiting.
  • Thanks for all the replies. We are looking forward to the trip.
  • As for reservations, not having them should not be a problem most of the time, except for Friday and Saturday nights in the most popular areas. That being said you should always be able to find something.

There is a long weekend (1st Monday in August is always a holiday) in all three provinces. The nights of August 2nd 3rd, and 4th would require reservations. That weekend will be booked solid at most campgrounds.

Monday July 1 is a holiday in all of Canada and that weekend will be busy as well in most campgrounds.

    Welcome to the Maritimes!!
  • We likewise look forward to a journey in that direction.

The responses are inviting, especially for seeking cooler summer climate.
  • Likely, 3 summers ago, the CA$ was higher than the US$. At the moment it's the reverse, but is currently climbing back to the parity point.

    Check: http://www.bankofcanada.ca/rates/exchange/

I'm sure you can understand that when US residents get a $ advantage in Canada, they are more likely to make the trip.

Re. your route, crossing into Canada at Sault Ste. Marie takes you to some very nice parts of Ontario, especially, if you stay north. & there is a recent discussion re. using Rte. 30 to go south of Montreal. Of course, I've lived in Montreal too as well as Northern Ontario, so I would like all of these places. for sure.

Oddly enough I have never made a stop in historic Quebec City, (bucket list).

I have lived down this way since 1978. All 4 provinces of Atlantic Canada have their special beauty. $ wise it costs less to take the ferry to PEI on your way working east. The bridge costs less than the ferry.

Bay of Fundy with its very high tides, Gros Morne National Park with its very special geological formations, and L'Anse aux Meadows Viking Heritage site are the "One Off" sites. There is nothing like them elsewhere on planet Earth.

    :B
  • We did the same trip including Newfoundland 3 summers ago and as you we prefer max flexibility and therefore did not do any reservations (except the ferry to NL)at all and had no problems what so ever.
