I'm not a fan of the politics in Quebec, but as a visitor/tourist I've had no problems communicating. There is a lot to see there, especially if you get away from Montreal, Quebec City, and the Autoroute.
Last trip there we were in a pretty ritzy but very rural restaurant. Menu all French, with some things I couldn't make out. Waiter a bit of a snootnose. Pulled out my dictionary, at which time two fellows from different tables got up, came over, and offered to help me out. Typical French Canadian hospitality. Darn good food, too!
