As an American, I don't think that you will have a problem, our experience is that in Quebec the locals seem to prefer Americans to us folks from the rest of Canada, even if we speak fluent "French Canadian" French.
Also bear in mind that your high school French is generally "Parisian" French and the local Quebec French is quite different, I have an easier time in understanding European French than that in Quebec because of the differences.
